Size is one of the first decisions a restaurant buyer needs to make when ordering leather menu covers — and one of the least straightforward. The “standard” size depends entirely on where your restaurant is located, what your menu format is, and how you want the cover to feel in a guest’s hands.

This guide covers every common menu cover size, when each format is used, and how to specify a custom size if none of the standards fit your menu design.

Why Size Matters More Than It Seems

A menu cover that is slightly too small for its insert looks cheap regardless of the leather quality. A cover that is too large for the table feels awkward and crowds the place setting. The right size is the one that fits your insert precisely, sits comfortably on your table format, and feels proportionate when a guest holds it.

The leather cover itself should be between 5 mm and 10 mm larger than the insert on each side — enough to protect the edges of the paper without making the cover feel oversized. We cut all covers to your specified dimensions, so the starting point is always your menu insert size, not a standard cover size.

Standard Sizes by Region

A5 (148 × 210 mm closed)

A5 is the most common menu cover size in Europe, the United Kingdom and Australia. It is compact, easy to handle and fits comfortably on smaller European café and bistro tables.

Best for: – Cafés, bistros and wine bars with concise menus – Single-page or two-page menu inserts – Tables under 60 cm wide where a larger cover would crowd the setting – Children’s menus and dessert menus as a secondary cover alongside a larger main menu

Insert size to specify: 140 × 200 mm (leaving a 4–5 mm margin inside the cover on each side)

A5 covers are also popular for wine list covers in European restaurants, particularly where the wine list is a single folded sheet rather than a multi-page booklet.

A4 (210 × 297 mm closed)

A4 is the standard for mid-size European restaurant menus and is the default format for most hotel F&B operations worldwide. It is large enough to present a full menu with comfortable text size, and proportionate on most restaurant tables.

Best for: – Full-service restaurants with multi-section menus – Hotel dining rooms and room service menus – In-room compendiums and hotel service guides – Any restaurant printing menus on standard A4 paper

Insert size to specify: 200 × 285 mm

A4 is the size we produce most frequently. If you are uncertain which size to order and your menu is printed on standard office paper, A4 is almost certainly the right choice for a European operation.

US Letter (216 × 279 mm closed)

US Letter is the standard for North American restaurants. It is very close in size to A4 — 6 mm wider and 18 mm shorter — but the difference matters: an A4 cover will not hold a US Letter insert correctly, and vice versa.

Best for: – Restaurants in the United States and Canada – Any operation printing menus on standard US Letter (8.5 × 11 inch) paper – Hotel properties operating under North American brand standards

Insert size to specify: 206 × 269 mm

If you are sourcing from China for a North American property, specify US Letter explicitly. Most Chinese suppliers default to A4 unless instructed otherwise.

A3 (297 × 420 mm closed)

A3 covers are used for large-format menus — typically in casual dining venues, pubs and gastropubs where the menu is extensive and presented in a broadsheet-style format. They are also used for daily specials boards presented at the table.

Best for: – Gastropubs and casual dining with extensive menus – Daily specials or prix-fixe menu supplements – Outdoor dining venues where a larger format is easier to read

Insert size to specify: 285 × 408 mm

A3 covers are less common in fine dining. At this size, the cover becomes a feature of the table rather than a discreet element of the place setting.

Tall / Portrait Custom Formats

Several restaurant formats use portrait covers that are taller and narrower than standard paper sizes. These are particularly common for:

Cocktail and spirits menus — a tall, narrow format (typically around 120 × 280 mm closed) suits a single-column drinks list and fits neatly beside a glass on a bar counter.

Tasting menu cards — fine dining restaurants presenting a tasting menu as a single card often use a portrait format around 100 × 250 mm, designed to sit elegantly beside the place setting rather than on top of it.

Wine lists — tall portrait covers (around 160 × 320 mm) allow a multi-page wine list to be presented in a format that feels distinct from the food menu.

For any of these formats, specify your insert dimensions and we will cut the cover to fit with the standard 5–8 mm margin on each side.

Landscape Formats

Landscape menu covers — wider than they are tall — are used in specific contexts:

• Bar menus placed flat on a bar counter, where landscape format is easier to read without picking the menu up
• Tablet menu covers — some restaurants present menus on iPads or tablets housed in a landscape leather cover
• Oversized feature menus — some high-end venues use a large landscape format as a deliberate design statement

Landscape covers are produced to order. Provide the closed dimensions and we will confirm the format before producing a sample.

Multi-Panel and Tri-Fold Formats

Not all menu covers are a simple single fold. Several formats use multiple panels:

Bi-fold (single fold): the standard format — one fold down the centre, two panels. Suitable for most restaurant menus.

Tri-fold: three panels, two folds. Used when the menu has distinct sections — starters, mains, desserts — that benefit from being presented on separate panels, or when the menu insert itself is a tri-fold leaflet.

Quad-fold: four panels. Less common, typically used for comprehensive menus in hotel all-day dining venues where breakfast, lunch, dinner and drinks are all presented in one cover.

For multi-panel formats, specify the number of panels and the closed dimensions. We will confirm the open dimensions and insert pocket configuration before production.

Specifying a Custom Size

If none of the standard sizes match your menu insert, custom sizing is straightforward. We cut leather covers to any dimension — there is no premium for non-standard sizes on orders of 50 pieces or more.

To specify a custom size, provide:

1. Insert dimensions (width × height of the paper or card that goes inside)
2. Number of inserts (single page, two pages, multi-page booklet)
3. Insert thickness if using a multi-page booklet — this affects the spine width
4. Preferred margin — the gap between the insert edge and the cover edge (we recommend 5–8 mm)

We will confirm the cover cut dimensions and include them in the digital proof before production.

Size and Logo Placement

Cover size directly affects how your logo is scaled and positioned. A logo that looks proportionate on an A4 cover can appear oversized on an A5 cover, or lost on an A3 cover.

When you send your brief, tell us the cover size and we will scale the logo appropriately in the digital proof. If you are ordering multiple cover sizes — a main menu in A4 and a wine list in a tall portrait format, for example — we will produce separate proofs for each size with the logo adjusted for each format.

Ordering Multiple Sizes Together

Many restaurants order two or three cover sizes in a single production run — a main menu cover, a wine list cover and a dessert menu or specials card. Ordering together ensures:

• Leather batch consistency — all covers cut from the same batch, so colour is identical across sizes
• Single DHL shipment — one delivery, one customs clearance, lower per-unit shipping cost
• Matched logo impression — same embossing die used across all products where the logo appears

If you are coordinating menu covers with check presenters or hotel products such as key card holders, the same logic applies: a single production run produces the most consistent result.
