What Is a Check Presenter? A Restaurant Buyer’s Guide to Bill Folders and Payment Wallets

The product has half a dozen names depending on where you are in the world. In the United States it is a check presenter. In the United Kingdom it is a bill folder or bill presenter. In Europe it is sometimes called a payment wallet, a receipt holder or a bill wallet. In hotel food and beverage it is often referred to simply as a folio.

Whatever you call it, the function is the same: a folded leather cover presented to the guest at the end of a meal, containing the bill, and returned with payment or a card.

This guide explains the different formats, what to specify when ordering, and how a well-chosen check presenter affects the guest experience at a moment that tends to be remembered.

Why the Check Presenter Matters

The bill presentation is the last physical touchpoint of a dining experience. Behavioural research on restaurant service consistently finds that guests form a disproportionately strong memory of the final moments of a visit — what psychologists call the peak-end effect. A creased, worn or generic bill folder at the close of an otherwise excellent meal leaves an impression that lingers.

The reverse is also true. A weighted leather check presenter, returned promptly and presented cleanly, signals that the restaurant’s attention to detail extends to the end of service — not just to the moment the food arrives.

This is why restaurants that invest in leather menu covers typically coordinate their check presenters in the same material and colour. The table tells a coherent story from the moment the guest sits down to the moment they leave.

Check Presenter Formats

Check presenters come in several formats. The right choice depends on your service style, bill format and how payment is typically handled.

Single-fold (most common)

A single piece of leather folded in half, with the bill inserted into a pocket or spine on the inside. Simple, lightweight and easy to handle. The standard format for most casual and mid-range restaurants.

Typical dimensions: 13 × 23 cm closed (fits a standard A5 or US receipt).

Double-fold / tri-fold

Folds into thirds, with separate pockets for the bill, the payment card and the receipt copy. Preferred by fine dining venues where the transaction has more steps — presenting the bill, taking the card, returning the receipt.

More substantial in the hand, which suits higher price-point environments.

With card slot

A single-fold presenter with a dedicated card slot on the inside left panel. The card slot keeps the payment card visible and accessible rather than loose inside the folder. Standard in most European fine dining formats.

With pen loop

A pen loop on the spine or inside panel allows a pen to be presented with the bill — useful for venues where guests sign receipts rather than entering a PIN. Less common now that chip-and-PIN and contactless payment are standard, but still specified by some hotel restaurants and private clubs.

With magnetic or press-stud closure

A closure keeps the presenter from falling open when carried across the dining room. Preferred by venues with tight floor plans where servers move quickly between tables.

Branded interior

The inside of the presenter can be printed or embossed with the restaurant name, website, social handles or a short message. Some venues use this space for a loyalty programme prompt or a review request. The exterior carries the logo; the interior carries the message.

Materials

Check presenters are available in the same materials as menu covers — genuine leather, PU leather and vegan microfibre. The material choice follows the same logic:

Genuine leather for fine dining, hotel restaurants and venues where the presenter is handled carefully and expected to last five or more years.

PU leather for casual dining, pub groups and high-turnover environments where presenters are handled roughly and replaced on a regular schedule.

The check presenter is handled more times per service than a menu cover — it travels from the till to the table and back multiple times each night. This makes durability a more important factor than it is for a menu cover that sits on the table for most of a service.

How Many Check Presenters Do You Need?

Check presenters are used at the end of service, which means fewer are in use simultaneously than menu covers. The standard calculation:

Check presenters = table count ÷ 2, plus a 20% buffer

For a 50-table restaurant: 50 ÷ 2 = 25, plus 20% buffer = 30 check presenters

This works for standard service where not all tables are at the bill stage simultaneously. For high-turnover venues where tables turn quickly and bills are presented in rapid succession, increase to one per three tables as a minimum.

Coordinating with Your Menu Covers and Wine List

The visual impact of a coordinated table setting is significantly greater than the sum of its parts. A menu cover and check presenter in the same leather, colour and logo placement creates a consistent brand expression across the full arc of the meal.

When ordering check presenters alongside menu covers or wine list covers, we produce all items from the same leather batch. This ensures colour consistency across products — something that cannot be guaranteed if items are ordered separately at different times.

The logo placement on a check presenter typically mirrors the menu cover: either front centre or bottom right corner, at the same relative scale. We include a digital proof showing all products together before production begins, so you can confirm the set looks consistent before committing to bulk production.

What to Specify When Ordering

When you contact us about check presenters, the information that moves a quote forward fastest:

Quantity — how many presenters you need. Our MOQ is 50 pieces, which covers most independent restaurants and small groups.

We reply with a full quote within 24 hours, including a digital mockup of the logo placement.

The Order Process

Sample first, production second. For first orders, we ship a physical sample of your check presenter — with your logo embossed — via DHL before bulk production begins. Most European buyers receive the sample within five to seven working days from our facility in Shiling, Guangzhou.

You inspect the sample: leather quality, logo impression, stitching, card slot fit, closure function. If anything needs adjusting, we adjust it before production. If you are happy, you confirm and we produce the full order.

Production lead time is 15 to 25 working days after sample approval, depending on quantity and complexity.

Bulk delivery ships DHL Express from Guangzhou, arriving in most of Europe in five to seven working days.

Common Questions

Can I order check presenters without ordering menu covers? Yes. Check presenters are available as a standalone order from MOQ 50 pieces. Many buyers start with check presenters and add menu covers on a second order once they have verified the quality.

Can the interior be personalised per table or per location? Interior personalisation by table number is possible but increases unit cost significantly. Per-location branding for a chain — where each site has the same exterior logo but a different interior detail — is more straightforward and we can quote this on request.

Do you supply replacement bill inserts or receipt sleeves? We supply leather covers only. Bill inserts are standard stationery items available locally in most markets.

Can the card slot accommodate different card sizes? Standard card slots fit any ISO 7810 ID-1 card (85.6 × 53.98 mm) — the size of a standard credit or debit card. This covers the vast majority of payment cards globally.
