Knowing the difference saves restaurants from spending time on repairs that will not hold, and from replacing covers that could easily be salvaged.

This guide covers the most common types of menu cover damage, which are repairable, how to do the repair, and when replacement is the better decision.

Damage Type 1: Corner and Edge Scuffing

Repairable: yes, for genuine leather. Partially for PU.

Surface scuffing on genuine leather corners — where the finish has worn away but the leather itself is intact — can be treated with a leather repair cream or edge paint in the matching colour. Applied carefully with a fine brush, the repair is often invisible under restaurant lighting.

How to do it:
Clean the area with a damp cloth and allow to dry. Apply leather repair cream in the closest matching colour to the scuffed area using a cotton bud or fine brush. Allow to dry, then buff lightly with a soft cloth. For deep scuffs that have removed material as well as finish, a thin application of leather filler before the colour treatment produces a better result.

For PU leather, surface scuffing that has not broken through to the backing material can be treated with PU leather repair compound in the matching colour. Scuffing that has removed the PU coating entirely and exposed the backing fabric is not effectively repairable — the backing absorbs repair compound unevenly and the result is visible.

Damage Type 2: Corner Delamination (PU Leather)

Repairable: temporarily, but not permanently.

Corner delamination — where the PU coating separates from the backing at the corners — is the characteristic failure mode of PU leather covers. In the early stage, the delaminated area is small and the coating has not yet begun to peel.

Temporary repair:
Apply a small amount of flexible leather adhesive (not superglue) under the delaminated area with a toothpick. Press flat and hold with a bulldog clip or binder clip for two to four hours. The repair holds the corner flat and prevents further peeling for several months, but delamination in PU leather is progressive — once it starts at one corner, it will eventually spread to others.

This repair is worth doing if the cover is otherwise in good condition and the delamination is at one corner only. It is not worth doing if multiple corners are affected, which indicates the PU coating has reached the end of its adhesion life and the cover should be replaced.

Damage Type 3: Spine Cracking

Repairable: for genuine leather. Not for PU.

Cracking at the spine of a genuine leather cover — the fold line where the cover opens and closes — is caused by the leather drying out and losing flexibility. It is a maintenance failure rather than a manufacturing defect, and it is preventable with correct conditioning.

For minor cracking (surface only, no separation):
Apply leather conditioner generously to the spine area and work it in with your fingers. Allow to absorb overnight. In many cases, minor spine cracking will soften and become less visible as the leather rehydrates. Follow with a regular conditioning routine going forward.

For significant cracking (leather separating at the fold):
This level of damage is not effectively repairable. The structural integrity of the cover is compromised and the spine will continue to split with use. Replace the cover.

For PU leather, spine cracking indicates the polyurethane layer has broken down at the fold line. PU leather does not respond to conditioning and the crack cannot be closed. Replace the cover.

Damage Type 4: Staining

Repairable: depends on the stain and material.

Some stains come out cleanly; others are permanent. The outcome depends on how quickly the stain was treated, what caused it, and whether it is on genuine leather or PU leather.

Stains that usually come out:
– Fresh food debris (wiped immediately)
– Beer and light-coloured drinks (blotted immediately, cleaned with leather cleaner)
– Grease (treated with cornstarch absorption, then leather cleaner)
– Surface dust and fingerprint accumulation (regular cleaning routine)

Stains that are usually permanent:
– Red wine left overnight on genuine leather
– Ink that has dried and set
– Bleach contact (also removes colour permanently)
– Oil-based cosmetics left in contact with genuine leather

For stains that have set, a leather colourant applied over the stained area can mask the discolouration. The result is rarely invisible at close inspection but may be acceptable under restaurant lighting. For covers where the stain is in a prominent position — front centre, directly under the logo — replacement is usually the better outcome.

Damage Type 5: Mould

Repairable: yes, if caught early.

Mould on leather covers is the result of damp storage. See our storage guide for how to prevent it. If mould has already developed:

Treatment for genuine leather:
Wipe the affected area with a cloth dampened with a diluted white vinegar solution (one part vinegar, three parts water). Work gently — do not scrub, which spreads the mould spores. Wipe clean with a damp cloth, then allow to dry completely in open air — not in a closed storage space. Apply leather conditioner after the cover has dried fully.

Treatment for PU leather:
The same vinegar solution approach works on PU leather. PU leather is less susceptible to mould penetrating the surface, but mould that develops at stitching lines or edge bonding can be harder to remove completely.

If mould has penetrated deeply into genuine leather — visible as dark staining that does not clean away — the cover is beyond effective repair. Mould that has colonised the leather fibres cannot be fully removed and will return.

When Replacement Is the Right Decision

Repair is appropriate when the damage is localised, the rest of the cover is in good condition, and the repair cost in time and materials is justified by the remaining service life of the cover.

Replacement is the right decision when:
– Delamination affects more than one corner or has progressed along the edge
– The spine has split rather than cracked
– Mould has penetrated the surface and cannot be cleaned away
– Staining is prominent and irreversible
– The cover no longer closes flat due to warping
– The logo embossing is no longer legible
– The cover is visibly inconsistent with the rest of the set in the dining room

A single cover that stands out from the others — worse condition, different colour from fading, repaired corner that is visible at close range — affects the overall impression of the table more than its individual condition suggests. When one cover in a set is beyond repair, assess whether it is time to replace the full set rather than the single piece.

Ordering Replacement Covers

For replacement orders, we hold your original specification on file. Provide your original order reference or a photograph of an existing cover, and we will match the leather colour, format and logo treatment as closely as possible.

If your original covers are several years old, a physical sample before bulk production is recommended for colour matching — leather colours can shift slightly between dye lots, and a sample approval ensures the replacement covers match your remaining stock.

Use the quote form to request replacement pricing, or browse our leather menu covers range for format and colour reference.

For guidance on choosing the right material for your replacement order, see our leather vs PU guide.
