class="art-content">

Leather colour is the most visible specification decision in a hospitality leather goods order — and the one most likely to disappoint if it is approached as an afterthought. A menu cover in the wrong colour creates a visual dissonance with the restaurant’s interior that guests register even when they cannot articulate why something feels slightly off.

This guide covers the standard leather colours available for hospitality goods, how different colours perform in service, how to match a leather colour to an existing interior, and what to specify when you need a custom colour.

The Standard Colour Range

Our standard colour range for hospitality goods covers the most commonly specified tones across restaurant, hotel and corporate gifting contexts. All standard colours are available across genuine leather, high-grade PU and microfibre vegan leather.

Black
The most versatile and most commonly specified colour across all hospitality contexts. Black reads as professional, contemporary and neutral — it does not compete with any interior colour scheme and does not show moderate handling marks under restaurant lighting. The safest default for buyers who are uncertain about colour.

Suitable for: all venue types, all service styles, all interior schemes.
Logo treatment: blind emboss is subtle but legible; gold or silver foil creates strong contrast.

Dark brown
A warm, rich tone that suits natural material interiors — exposed timber, stone, linen — and heritage aesthetic schemes. Dark brown develops the most attractive patina of any colour in genuine leather. Slightly more specific than black in interior application — works beautifully in the right context and conspicuously in the wrong one.

Suitable for: gastropubs, wine bars, farm-to-table restaurants, boutique hotels with natural material interiors.
Logo treatment: gold foil preferred — blind emboss can be difficult to read on dark brown at low light levels.

Cognac / tan
A warm amber-brown — the colour most associated with classic leather goods in the European tradition. Cognac leather communicates craft, heritage and quality. More visible than black or dark brown, which means it works as a design statement but requires a consistent interior context to carry it.

Suitable for: fine dining, wine bars, boutique hotels, members clubs with traditional aesthetic.
Caution: shows handling marks and minor staining more readily than dark colours. Requires correct maintenance to maintain appearance. Not recommended for high-volume casual dining.
Logo treatment: blind emboss at this colour produces an elegant, tone-on-tone impression. Avoid gold foil — it competes with the warmth of the leather itself.

Burgundy / oxblood
A deep red-brown with strong heritage associations. Used extensively in members clubs, law firms, traditional hotel libraries and formal dining rooms. Distinctive without being unusual — buyers who specify this colour have usually made a considered interior decision that the leather should anchor.

Suitable for: members clubs, formal dining rooms, hotel libraries and bars, law firm corporate gifting.
Logo treatment: gold foil creates a classic heraldic combination. Blind emboss produces a refined tone-on-tone effect.

Navy
A formal, contemporary alternative to black. Navy leather suits modern hotel interiors, corporate environments and restaurant concepts with a coastal or contemporary nautical identity. Less common than black or brown but increasingly specified by design-conscious buyers who want distinction from the default.

Suitable for: contemporary hotel restaurants, coastal dining, corporate gifting for finance and professional services.
Logo treatment: silver foil creates the strongest contrast; blind emboss works well on mid-tone navy.

Forest green
A versatile dark tone that suits natural, botanical and heritage interior schemes. Forest green leather has become increasingly popular over the past five years as interior design has moved toward deeper, richer colour palettes. Well-chosen for the right interior; conspicuous in a neutral or corporate environment.

Suitable for: wine bars, farm-to-table restaurants, boutique hotels with botanical identity, wellness-oriented hospitality.
Logo treatment: blind emboss or gold foil depending on the exact shade — darker greens benefit from foil for legibility.

Slate / dark grey
A neutral, contemporary colour that sits between black and navy in character. Slate leather suits minimalist interior schemes where black would be too stark and navy too directional. Less commonly specified than the above colours, which means it creates distinction without eccentricity.

Suitable for: contemporary fine dining, design hotels, tech industry corporate gifting.
Logo treatment: silver foil creates strong contrast; blind emboss on mid-tone slate is clean and understated.

How Colour Performs in Service

Colour choice affects practical performance as well as aesthetics.

Dark colours (black, dark brown, navy, forest green, burgundy) conceal moderate handling marks, fingerprints and minor surface wear. Under warm restaurant lighting, small marks are essentially invisible. The practical choice for high-volume environments.

Mid-tones (cognac, slate) show handling marks more readily than dark colours. Surface marks that would be invisible on black leather are visible on cognac under direct light. Correct maintenance — regular cleaning with a pH-neutral leather cleaner — keeps mid-tone covers presentable, but the maintenance requirement is higher than for dark colours.

Light tones (cream, off-white, pale grey) are occasionally specified for specific design concepts — typically high-end beach resorts or minimalist fine dining. These colours require the most careful maintenance and are not recommended for any high-handling context. We can supply light-tone covers on request; buyers should be aware of the maintenance implications.

For guidance on how different colours perform under maintenance routines, see our cleaning and maintenance guide.

Matching a Colour to Your Interior

The most reliable approach to colour specification is not to choose from a list but to identify the existing colour in your interior that the leather should coordinate with, then match the leather to that reference.

Step 1: Identify your reference colour
Look at the dominant material in the dining room or hotel space — the upholstery, the timber finish, the wall colour, the floor material. Which of these does the leather need to coordinate with? For most venues, the answer is either the upholstery or the dominant timber finish.

Step 2: Get a Pantone reference
Ask your interior designer or FF&E consultant for the Pantone reference of the relevant material. If the material was specified to a Pantone reference, matching the leather to that reference is straightforward. If not, a Pantone fan deck — available from design supply shops — allows you to identify the closest Pantone match to your reference material.

Step 3: Request a physical colour sample
For any non-standard colour or any standard colour where the match to your interior is important, request a physical leather sample in the specified colour before approving bulk production. Photograph colour matching is unreliable — leather colour under restaurant lighting differs from the same leather photographed outdoors or under office light.

Step 4: Review on-site
Take the leather sample to your venue and view it alongside the reference material under the actual lighting conditions. Approve the colour only when it looks correct in context.

Custom Colours

Custom colours — outside our standard range — are available on orders of 100 pieces or more. The custom colour process:

Provide a Pantone reference or a physical swatch

We produce a leather sample in the closest achievable match

You approve or request further adjustment

Bulk production proceeds after colour approval

Custom colour matching adds five to seven working days to the sample lead time and a small premium to the per-unit price. For boutique hotels and restaurants with a specific interior colour that is central to the brand identity, the result — a leather colour that is genuinely distinctive rather than chosen from a standard list — is worth the additional time.

Colour and Logo Embossing: The Interaction

Colour choice affects how the logo reads on the cover. The key relationships:

Leather colour

Blind emboss

Gold foil

Silver foil

Black

Subtle, legible under direct light

Strong contrast

Strong contrast

Dark brown

Moderate, best under direct light

Best option

Less appropriate

Cognac/tan

Good tone-on-tone effect

Can compete with leather tone

Clean, contemporary

Burgundy

Elegant tone-on-tone

Classic combination

Works well

Navy

Good, clear impression

Less common, works

Strong, contemporary

Forest green

Works on darker shades

Traditional feel

Modern feel

Slate

Clear impression

Less common

Best option

The most important practical consideration: blind emboss on very dark leather (black, very dark brown) can be difficult to read under low restaurant lighting. For venues with warm, dim lighting, gold or silver foil ensures the logo is visible in service conditions.

Specifying Colour in Your Brief

When submitting your order brief, specify colour as:

A Pantone reference (e.g. “Pantone 19-1217 TPX”)

A standard colour name from our range (e.g. “dark brown — standard range”)

A physical swatch sent to our Shiling address for matching

A reference photograph if a Pantone is not available (note that photograph matching is approximate)

Never specify colour as a general description alone (“dark,” “warm,” “natural”) without a reference — these descriptions are interpreted differently by different people and produce inconsistent results.

For the full brief template and specification guidance, see our communication guide.
